Strep Throat
Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by a bacteria streptococcus pyogenes or Group A Strep (GAS) Symptoms of strep throat include fever >102, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes or tonsils, headache, and nausea. Strep throat can occur with a rash, and is then known as scarlet fever. Treatment is done with oral antibiotics. Untreated strep throat can cause Rheumatic Fever which is a much more severe disease. Other serious complications of strep throat are abscesses, and a kidney disorder called acute glomerulonephritis. Strep throat is diagnosed by your pediatrician using a swab of your tonsils and testing it for bacteria.
